Current R&D projects and summary result of past projects

ClassNK Research Institute has worked on or currently studies the following themes as part of its research and development work directly related to ship classification with the aim of better contributing to ensuring the safety of ships and protection of the marine environment.

Ultra-large container ships

Prevention of brittle fracture on ultra-large container ships
The aim of this project is to develop the technical standards in order to prevent brittle fracture of ships that could initiate in welds when very thick steel plates are used particularly in the construction of very large container ships.

Structural influences of engine room/deck house arrangement of large container carriers
As the container ships grow in size, various arrangements of engine room / deck house are going to be adopted, such as midship accommodation quarter arrangement etc. This project is intended to investigate the effect of these newer structural arrangements on hull strength, particularly with respect to hull girder torsional-bending strength.

Effect of hydro-elastic response on hull strength
It is known that significant hull girder vibration could occur when the ship size increases thereby making the ship structure’s natural period closer to the wave period, which is so called a hydro-elastic problem.
The aim of this study is to quantify the hydro-elastic effect on hull response regarding ultimate longitudinal strength and fatigue strength.

Very large ore carriers

Guidelines for very large ore carrier structures
Nowadays, a number of very large ore carriers (VLOCs) exceeding 300 m in ship length are being designed and constructed. The purpose of this project is to develop technical guidelines for structural strength assessment of very large ore carriers to enable safe yet reasonable design.

Protection of the marine environment

Corrosion caused by water-emulsion fuel
Water-emulsion fuel is one of the technologies to cope with NOx emission regulations, but the combustion of the fuel produces a rise of the sulfuric acid dew point due to the increase of water content in flue gas. The purpose of this R&D is to prepare the technical basis of the rules to prevent corrosion damage caused by water-emulsion fuel.

Other projects

Cause and preventive of shaft damage related to torsional vibration
The aim of this project is to investigate the affairs of damage due to shaft torsion vibration, and to prepare for the relevant the technical service.

Interference of shaft coupling reamer bolts
When a propeller shaft is pulled out for inspection, "seizure" damage might be found in the reamer bolts of the shaft coupling flange. The purpose of this R&D is to investigate the proper interference of reamer bolts and prepare a standard solution of the interference to prevent such "seizure" damage.

Fatigue monitoring on hull fatigue strength
The aim of this project is to clarify and solve the technical, operational and practical issues involved with fatigue damage control by use of monitoring technologies and to prepare for the technical services on hull fatigue management system.
