ClassNK commences research project with Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo on refinement the internal pressure evaluation method for dry bulk cargo subjected to vertical acceleration
Tokyo, ClassNK has commenced research with Kuwano Laboratory, Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Department of Human and Social Systems, Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo to enhance the accuracy of the internal pressure evaluation method for dry bulk cargo loads subjected to vertical acceleration.
Dry bulk cargoes, such as ores, complicatedly behave due to the friction between particles, differing significantly from liquid cargo in terms of the loads exerted on the ship’s hold. While Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships Part C and the Common Structural Rules (CSR) incorporate findings from previous studies, collaborative research with the Kuwano Laboratory has revealed that there is still room for improvement in accuracy.
We are undertaking a study through experiments and numerical simulations to establish a more precise design load evaluation formula that rationally considers the characteristics of dry bulk cargo. This research aims to develop a highly accurate evaluation method for the internal pressure of dry bulk cargo loads, contributing to the rational design of bulk carriers.
Summary of Kuwano Laboratory, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo:
Fundamental studies of soil mechanics such as evaluation of mechanical properties of ground materials by high-precision indoor tests, practical studies for establishing a sustainable society such as long-term behavior of underground structures and soil structures and rational renewal methods, and studies on ground subsidence have been conducted.
