UN No.3077 Cargoes

Loading of UN No. 3077 Cargoes / Environmentally hazardous substance, solid, n.o.s

  1. “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” and “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A, UN No. 3077)” are cargoes that are not listed in the current IMSBC Code. ClassNK does not have authorization to recognize the loading of bulk cargoes that are not listed in the IMSBC Code and cannot issue IMSBC Code fitness certificates or certificates of fitness for ships carrying dangerous goods (DG certificates) for these cargoes such as “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” and “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A, UN No. 3077)”.

However, all of the aforementioned cargoes (“METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” and “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A, UN No. 3077)”) are considered to be similar to “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, MHB)” and “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A)” which are listed in the IMSBC Code. At ClassNK, ships that conform to the loading requirements for “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, MHB)” or “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A)” are considered to conform to the loading requirements for “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” or “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A, UN No.3077)”.

If “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” or “MINERAL CONCENTRATES (Group A, UN No.3077)” have been recognized as above by the flag administration, it is possible for these cargoes to be loaded.

  2. In line with the abovementioned (1), as ClassNK does not have the authorization to recognize the loading of cargoes not listed in IMSBC Code, permission for loading these cargoes must be given by the flag administration (refer to IMSBC Code Section 1, 1.3).

To receive permission from the flag administration, ClassNK can issue a technical opinion letter for loading of the concerned cargoes but in this case, the following steps must be taken.

    1. Please submit the cargo information issued by the cargo shipper or the loading port Authority (e.g shipper’s declaration, MSDS).
    2. When it has been confirmed that a ship conforms to the loading requirements of the concerned cargoes, ClassNK will issue a technical opinion letter.
    3. III.Based on the technical opinion letter issued by ClassNK, please obtain the final permission for loading the concerned cargoes from the flag administration.
  3. In the cargo information issued by the cargo shipper or the loading port Authority, some “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” are classified as low fire risk cargoes. For cargoes that are classified as low fire risk and have been exempt by the flag administration from installing fixed fire extinguishing arrangement (FFEA) in the cargo holds, there is no need to install FFEA.

For ships that are loaded with “METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES (Group A&B, UN No. 3077)” cargoes classified as low fire risk and have not been installed with FFEA in the cargo holds, in addition to the steps mentioned in (2) above, an application must be made to the flag administration for exemption from FFEA. Furthermore, ClassNK believes that when applying for exemption from FFEA, an exemption certification including METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES must also be submitted to the flag administration.
