Measures for Providing Heading Information at Emergency Steering Positions
With regard to the "measures for providing heading information, particularly for providing compass readings at emergency steering positions" required under the revised Regulation V/12(f) of the 1989 revision of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, the interpretations of the Society and of the governments whose interpretations are different from that of the Society are shown in NK Technical Information No.144 and No.152.
In this respect, the Isle of Man Government has recently notified the Society of its interpretation that a gyro-repeater should be fitted permanently in the emergency steering positions as a measure for compass readings to be taken there. Accordingly, for a ship being constructed with the Isle of Man registry on and after the issue of this circular and having emergency steering positions in it, special attention should be paid to the above interpretation of the Government.
It is reminded that the Argentine, Bahamian, Kuwaiti and Isle of Man governments require a gyro-repeater to be fitted permanently in the emergency steering positions of ships.
