Gross Tonnage for Determination of Application of GMDSS Requirements to Panamanian Ships
In determining the application of the SOLAS requirements, Panamanian Maritime Authority has so far accepted the gross tonnage of US tonnage regulations or other national tonnage regulations of the states when ships were flagged in Panama from those states.
This Panama Maritime Authority has recently set forth in Merchant Marine Circular No.109/1999 its requirements for the gross tonnage of ships for determination of the application of the GMDSS requirements to Panamanian ships that should be measured in accordance with the International Tonnage Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships 1969 (TM69) from 1 February 2002 instead of those measured as per above.
When the gross tonnage of a cargo ship measured on TM69 is 300 GT or more the relevant GMDSS equipment is to be fitted in compliance with the SOLAS requirements and is to be subject to Safety Radio Surveys from the date.
