Exemption from installation of a Radio Direction Finder on Singapore Flag Ships and Bahamian Flag Ships

Regulation V/12(p) of the 1988 Amendments of 1974 SOLAS Convention specifies the requirements for installation of a radio direction finder and for exemption from its installation on certain conditions.

The Singapore Government and the Bahamian Government have notified the Society of conditions for the exemption, and procedures for the exemption and for the issue of an exemption certificate for a ship flying their flags.
Based on the notifications from these governments, the conditions and the procedures are re-produced as per below for your reference.

1.Singapore
1.1 Conditions for Exemption.
The ship should be fitted with GPS receiver(s) in accordance with condition -1 or -2 below.
-1 One GPS receiver, when the receiver conforms to IMO Resolution A.819(19), and functions independently of any other radio communication and navigational equipment.
-2 Two GPS receivers, when the receivers do not conform to IMO Resolution A.819(19).
In this case, at least one of the GPS receivers should function independently of any other radio communication and navigational equipment.
1.2 Procedures for Exemption.
-1 Shipowners/shipbuilders who may wish to apply for the exemption should submit the following documents to the nearest branch office of the Society.
(1) An application for the exemption with manufacturers, types and number of GPS receivers, and
(2) In case of 1.1-1 above, a copy of document certifying its conformity to IMO Resolution A.819(19).
-2 The Society, after ascertainment of satisfaction of the conditions for exemption at an SE survey, issues a surveyor's report (a sample form attached).
