The shift toward a zero-emission society has accelerated in a variety of fields, with governments making their GHG targets more ambitious and sustainable finance gaining more attention. Likewise, the time has come for the maritime industry to systematically manage the GHG emissions from shipping, as represented by the introduction of a GHG emissions evaluation framework into international shipping.
ClassNK provides Zero-Emission Transition Support Services, a comprehensive menu of services to support customers in dealing with the various challenges they may encounter when managing GHG emissions in pursuit of zero-emission shipping.
Pathway to Zero-Emission in International Shipping
The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy was adopted at the 80th session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) held in July 2023. In order to contribute to encouraging broad discussions among stakeholders and accelerating efforts towards decarbonization of international shipping, ClassNK tried to visualize the actions required by the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy in quantitative terms by estimating the total GHG emissions, the scale of introduction of zero-emission fuels, and the scale of introduction of zero-emission fuel ships required to achieve the 2030 zero-emission fuels introduction target and GHG emissions reduction target in the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, applying to ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above engaged in international voyage (subject to IMO DCS).

Certification of management system for GHG emissions from ships
ClassNK encourages its customers through certification of their voluntary efforts to set a clear target for GHG reductions and to develop an appropriate management system for its achievement. ClassNK MRV Portal
ClassNK released “ClassNK MRV Portal” in 2017, a software to assist the development of emission reports required by the IMO-DCS/EU MRV. ClassNK MRV Portal is now under improvement to install a continuous monitoring function for CII, which would become effective from 2023, so that our customers can always check their fleets’ CII ratings of any given point in time.

ClassNK ZETA (Zero Emission Transition Accelerator)
ClassNK ZETA (Zero Emission Transition Accelerator) is a tool to enable various customers to efficiently manage GHG emissions from ships, linked with the ClassNK MRV Portal. It is equipped with features for constantly monitoring CO2 emissions and CII ratings of individual ships and entire fleets, and for simulating how CO2 emissions and CII ratings would change if slow steaming, etc. was implemented.
It is also expected to be an integrated data management platform that can be used for reporting based on global frameworks such as the Poseidon Principles and the Sea Cargo Charter by a variety of customers, including shipowners, cargo owners, financial institutions, and cargo owners.

GHG Emissions Verification & Assessment
EEDI/EEXI/DCS/CII (as statutory services)
EU-MRV・UK-MRV verification / EU-ETS for shipping sector
In addition to the existing verification services for EEDI and IMO-DCS, ClassNK released simple assessment tools for EEXI and CII on its website for its customers’ smooth response to EEXI requirements/CII effective from 2023. We also provide information of EU-MRV / UK-MRV regulations and extension of EU-ETS to the shipping sector which will be introduced from 2024.

Support for Poseidon Principles and Sea Cargo Charter
Some global frameworks have been recently launched to support the decarbonization of international shipping; the Poseidon Principles were established in 2019 to support CO2 reductions from the standpoint of financial institutions, and the Sea Cargo Charter in 2020 from the standpoint of charterers. ClassNK conducts assessment of CO2 reductions as an independent third party to assist customers’ CO2 emissions calculations and to evaluate their CO2 reductions efforts. Evaluation for the achievement of carbon neutrality
As climate change is gaining more and more attention on a global scale, companies are increasingly setting their ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Customers may also be aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 for their fleet. For such customers, ClassNK, as an independent third party, conducts evaluation on how much the CO2 emissions from the customer’s shipping business are aligned with the pathway toward their goals of carbon neutrality.

Support for biofuels usage
Biofuels are expected as “carbon neutral” fuels and the number of biofuel trials has been increasing recently. ClassNK responds to various inquiries and provides information on biofuels so as to facilitate the understanding of biofuel usage on ships. For the details of biofuels, please refer to the following.
Support for alternative fuels introduction
ClassNK issued “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 1.1)” as a part of its services for GHG emissions reduction support. This is an update to “Guidelines for Ships Using Low-Flashpoint Fuels (Methyl/Ethyl/Alcohol/LPG)” to newly include the requirements for ammonia-fueled vessels and to comprehensively cover the safety requirements for ships using these alternative fuels. Furthermore, the conventional Notation of “LNG Ready” has been updated to “Alternative Fuel Ready” and the relevant requirements have been organized for the ships with designs for the future usage of alternative fuels and/or with partial installation of relevant equipment.
