Safe working load is defined as the maximum allowable load and expressed in kilo-Newtons (kN) or tons (t) in 1.2.1(6) and 1.2.1(10) of the current Rules for Cargo Handling Appliances of the Society. The Rules in this respect are under revision in line with the national regulations and standards in which safe working load (net load) of the cargo handling appliances is clearly specified as a term for mass of the cargo.
For assignment of safe working load (S.W.L) of the cargo gear and the loose gear under the Rules for Cargo Handling Appliances, please be informed following procedures accordingly.
・ Safe working load is to be defined as the maximum allowable mass of the cargo which the cargo handling appliances can be operated safely, and to be expressed in tons (t) or kilo-grams (kg).
・ Certificates relating to safe working load will be issued using tons (t) or kilo-grams (kg). Accordingly, application for initial survey of cargo handling appliances and markings of safe working load are to be expressed in tons (t) or kilo-grams (kg).
In cases where it is not feasible to follow these procedures under specific circumstances or requirements of a given transaction, the Society will issue certificates in the units stated in the application for initial survey of cargo handling appliances.
