Oil Analysis as Part of the Preventive Maintenance System for Oil Lubricated Propeller Shafts
The preventive maintenance system has been incorporated in 8.1.3 of Chapter 8, Part B of the Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships. (For ships for which the preventive maintenance system has been approved by the Society, the notation (PSCM) is affixed to the ship's classification character.)
The Society has started to offer a new technical service of oil analysis concerned with the preventive maintenance system for oil lubricated propeller shafts specified in B8.1.3, Part B of the Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships.
An outline of the new service and the procedures for oil analysis are outlined below for your information and reference.
1. The oil analysis service will be carried out at the request of either the owner or shipbuilder based on the application submitted to the Marine and Industrial Service Department (MID) of ClassNK. A properly packaged sample of the oil to be tested is to be submitted together with the application to ClassNK. (Please note that the applicant is responsible for all costs involved in preparing and forwarding any oil samples for testing.)
Applications and oil samples are to be forwarded to the following address:
ClassNK, Marine and Industrial Service Department (MID)
4-7 Kioi-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 102-8567
Telephone: +81-3-5226-2041 / Telefax: +81-3-5226-2039
2. As a rule, a sample consisting of about 200ml is required for the analysis. The sample is to be forwarded to MID at ClassNK with the application in a proper container suitably sealed and securely packed.
3. An analysis report will be forwarded from MID at ClassNK by facsimile as well as delivered by mail within three to five (3-5) working days upon receipt by MID.
4. Applicants may choose to have either all or a portion of the items analyzed under the service as shown in table B8.1.3, Part B of the Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships (summarized on the application form for your convenience).
It may be noted that thus far, some ninety-five ships registered with ClassNK have been assigned the PSCM notation for their adoption of a preventive maintenance system approved by the Society as of 21 September 2000.
