Decisions taken by This Society in the Wake of ERIKA
As you know well, the following enhanced requirements have been taken by this Society in the wake of ERIKA accident and are to be entry into force on 1st July 2001 to further improving safety at sea and protection of the marine environment.
1. All ballast tanks sharing a common plane boundary with cargo tanks with heating coils shall be examined internally on an annual basis on tankers subject to ESP after the ship has reached 15 years of age. Tankers or areas in tanks where coating was found to be GOOD condition at the previous intermediate or special survey, may be specially considered by the attending surveyor(s).
2. Intermediate hull surveys of ships, subject to ESP, which are over 15 years of age will be enhanced to the scope of the preceding special survey including Docking Survey (In-Water Survey may be acceptable) and:
I) testing of ballast and cargo tanks is not required unless deemed necessary by the attending surveyor.
Ii) Drydocking is to become mandatory from 1st July 2002.
3. On ships of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and above, and subject to ESP, starting with
special survey No.3, all special and intermediate hull classification surveys will be
carried out by at least two exclusive surveyors.
4. All statutory surveys on ships shall be carried out by exclusive surveyors.
5. Thickness Measurements required in the context of hull structural classification surveys shall be witnessed by a surveyor.
