As already advised in ClassNK Technical Information No.TEC-0872 issued on 10 November 2011, the revised MARPOL ANNEX V (Resolution MEPC.201(62)) will enter into force on 1 January 2013. The revised MARPOL ANNEX V prohibits the discharge of all types of garbage into the sea unless explicitly permitted under the revised Annex V. It is necessary for shipowners to prepare the revised Garbage Management Plan, revised Garbage Record Book, etc. by the end of this year. No conventional certificate or inspection to issue it is regulated under the ANNEX V, as in the past.

ClassNK has ever done the appraisal service related MARPOL ANNEX V under voluntary base as requested by shipowners (refer to ClassNK Technical Information No.TEC-0307). ClassNK has started to do the appraisal service according to the revised ANNEX V. Both examination of Garbage Management Plan and onboard inspection are required to issue the appraisal certificate. Please contact a convenient ClassNK service site for the application. (Only examination of Garbage Management Plan can be done without onboard inspection. No appraisal certificate will be issued in this case.)

All of issued appraisal certificates relating to the existing MARPOL ANNEX V will be expired on 1 January 2013 as revised MARPOL ANNEX V will enter into force. Form of the appraisal certificate of ClassNK has been revised this time due to change of the guideline referred to, etc. for the revised MARPOL ANNEX V.
